Some of the interpreters here suck. I know interpreting is a tough job, but so is teaching. I am so sick of them misinterpreting what it is that I am saying. I may not be fluent in sign language, but I know enough to understand that sometimes the interpreter is not signing exactly what I said or meant. Like the time I pretended to be super emotional and hugged my student and said, "I'm going to miss my babies!" I swear the interpreter signed, "She just called you a baby." WTF?!

If you are a deaf ed teacher, WHY aren't you fluent in ASL? You should be ashamed. Communicate directly with your students. Why do you even need an interpreter with them?
ReplyDeleteDiscuss your concerns with the interpreter. Trust me, until you are fluent you could not possibly evaluate an interpreter's sign choices or effectiveness. What you can asses are their qualifications - is the terp RID certified? Do they have an EIPA 4.0 or above?
Maybe this person was not a deaf ed. teacher.
ReplyDeleteBut, I know plenty of deaf ed. teachers who are not fluent in sign language (even the ones who claim to be fluent). The ones who know some sign language or are proficient in it, but don't teach using sign language, maybe are not comfortable teaching in a language that they are not fluent or native in.
